El Niño Is Coming: Is Your Home Covered?
By: MJ Stearns | Your Local Santa Cruz Realtor | LIC #01700756
Forecasters say this winter could bring one of the strongest El Niños on record, and now is the time to check your home insurance. The Climate Prediction Center puts the odds of a "very strong" El Niño this fall and winter at greater than 90 percent. Its latest outlooks raised the chance of above-normal rain to over 50 percent across much of coastal California.
As a Santa Cruz realtor for about 20 years, I've seen what big storm seasons do to our homes. A few minutes with your policy now can save you a lot of heartache later.
Why Santa Cruz should pay attention
Our beaches, river and creeks make Santa Cruz a beautiful place to live, and they also put many homes in the path of winter water. Forecasters expect El Niño's effects to build slowly through late fall, then ramp up quickly in the core winter months. That can mean a series of strong atmospheric rivers.
Many of us still remember the January 2023 storms that battered our coastline, from Capitola to Seacliff. Homes near the San Lorenzo River, low-lying neighborhoods, creekside properties and anything close to the beach face the most risk. But heavy rain can flood streets, garages and basements almost anywhere.
No forecast is a guarantee. Forecasters note that even a very strong El Niño doesn't promise a wet winter. Still, the odds favor a stormy season, and it pays to be ready.
